  • Today, on International Transgender Day of Visibility, we celebrate and honour the trans and gender-diverse people in our community. 💜

According to the Toronto Street Needs Assessment, the number of people experiencing homelessness who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ has nearly doubled, with more than 1 in 5 respondents identifying as 2SLGBTQ+. These numbers remind us that inclusive, affirming shelter spaces aren't just important, they are essential.

At Street Haven, we are committed to being a safe space for all women and gender-diverse individuals.

  • When our clients need us, we show up! 💪✨

Stability case managers Akosua and Laura dove headfirst into their first Extreme Clean alongside @vhahomehealthcare , all in support of one of our Pathways to Independence clients.

This is what going above and beyond actually looks like. Our case managers don't just coordinate care from behind a desk, they roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to help the women we serve build real, lasting independence.

We were so honoured to have MPP @kristynwongtam join us at our new Training Centre at 87
Pembroke Street! They expressed their full support for Street Haven’s vision and applauded the
work we are doing for women experiencing homelessness in Toronto. Having that recognition
from our community leaders means everything to us. 🙏

So, what is the Training Centre all about? It’s a shared, multi-use space that is home to:

💻 Employment counselling + digital literacy programs
🎓Job readiness and skills-building
🎮 Recreational and social programs
🤝 Staff meetings and team collaboration
💚 A space our clients and staff can truly call their own

Funded by two grants of $400,000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation ( @ontrillium ), we were able to open a new Training Centre and launch on-site mental health services for women experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Our Employment + Training team is now working hand in hand with shelter staff every single day
building goals together, breaking down barriers together, and celebrating wins together. That’s
wraparound care in action.

Integrated approaches. Innovative offerings. And women at the centre of it all. 💪

This is what Hamza had to say:

“I would strongly encourage employers to partner with Street Haven. The team provides thoughtful preparation and ongoing support for candidates, which makes the transition into employment smoother for both the employer and the employee. Partnering with Street Haven is not only an opportunity to access motivated and capable talent, but also a chance to make a meaningful contribution to a woman’s journey towards stability and independence. Candidates who come through Street Haven often demonstrate remarkable resilience, determination, and a genuine desire to succeed. Many bring a strong sense of responsibility, adaptability, and appreciation for the opportunity to work and grow. When given the right environment and support, these qualities translate into dependable and committed employees.”

We’re proud to share that our team recently completed a Harm Reduction training facilitated by one of our own staff members, Akosua Gyan-Mante. The session opened space for honest conversation, skill-building, and reflection on how we can better show up for the people we serve. 💛

Staff explored overdose response, the power of language, and what it truly means to meet people where they’re at, all grounded in lived experience and frontline knowledge.

In Akosua’s words: “It’s powerful to come full circle from receiving support to now being in a position to give it. I’m grateful to be part of a team that is choosing empathy, understanding, and love in how we support women and people who use drugs.”

Thank you to everyone who participated and continues to show up with care, openness, and a willingness to learn.
