Emergency Shelter Services
Who we are
At Street Haven at the Crossroads, our Emergency Shelter Housing Program provides a safe haven and critical support for women experiencing homelessness in Toronto. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our low-barrier emergency shelter offers immediate access to safety, warmth, and care for up to 50 women each night.
We understand that the women we serve often face complex and overlapping challenges, including homelessness, substance use, mental health concerns, trauma, and experiences of gender-based violence. That’s why our program is rooted in a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, ensuring that each woman is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.
Women arriving at Street Haven’s Emergency Shelter receive:
- A safe, clean, and welcoming place to sleep
- Nutritious meals and snacks
- Access to showers, hygiene products, and basic clothing
- On-site support workers and crisis intervention
- Referrals to medical care, mental health services, and addiction recovery programs
- Pathways to transitional housing and long-term stability
Our shelter acts not just as a place of refuge, but as a critical first step toward recovery, healing, and empowerment. We work collaboratively with each woman to help her navigate her unique journey — whether that means finding permanent housing, reconnecting with health supports, or simply taking the next right step forward.
If you or someone you know needs emergency shelter, or if you’re looking to support our mission, we welcome you to learn more about how Street Haven is helping women move from crisis to confidence.

At the heart of our programming is a simple but powerful belief: when women feel connected, to themselves and to their community, everything changes.
That's why we offer programming like yoga across our services, from our Supportive Housing to our Seniors' Social Club. These spaces are designed to foster both physical and mental wellbeing, giving the women in our programs the tools to tune into their own mental health while building meaningful connections with those around them.
Mental health support can take many forms, and sometimes, it looks like moving together, breathing together, and showing up for one another week after week.
This Mental Health Week, we're reminded that connection is not a luxury. It's essential.

This year's theme, "Come Together, Canada: Stronger Connections, Better Mental Health,” sits at the very heart of Michelle's clinical philosophy.
"At our core, humans are wired for connection. Not simply through time spent together, but through safe, secure emotional bonds where others feel accessible and responsive. When this need goes unmet, isolation can take hold, significantly impacting mental health."
Drawing on the work of Gabor Maté and Johann Hari's TED talk, Michelle approaches her work with a foundational belief: the opposite of addiction isn't sobriety, it’s connection. This lens shapes how she walks alongside the women at Street Haven, providing trauma-informed, client-centred psychotherapy to individuals navigating complex mental health and substance use challenges.
What keeps her going? The resilience she witnesses every day.
"I feel deeply honoured to be invited into my clients' wellbeing journeys... Seeing clients return to school and invest in their education is especially fulfilling, as it reflects a growing sense of possibility and self-belief, and I am equally moved by the ways they move closer to their values and more authentic selves."
Thank you, Michelle. We're so grateful for the safe, compassionate space you create for the women we serve.

Today, our team gathered at Grant House dressed in red to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and honour those we've lost and those still missing.
It was a meaningful afternoon. We heard from one of our clients, Brianna, and a few of our staff, who generously shared their stories and perspectives. Grant House residents and staff came together to prepare Indigenous dishes for everyone; a beautiful act of community, culture, and care.
At Street Haven, we work alongside women who carry complex trauma, and we know that healing cannot happen without safety, without being seen, and without connection. Colonial violence, systemic racism, and intergenerational trauma are not abstract concepts. They show up in the lives of the women we serve every day.
This Mental Health Week, as we reflect on what it means to "Come Together," Red Dress Day reminds us that connection and community are not just ideals; they are acts of resistance, remembrance, and love.
Today we stand in honour of those taken, those still missing, and the families who carry their memory.

For women in Toronto navigating trauma, housing instability, or substance use challenges, loneliness isn't just a feeling. It's a barrier to recovery. At Street Haven, we know that coming together isn't just a campaign message; it's the foundation of healing.
Our mental health services are built to break that barrier down, offering trauma-informed psychotherapy, individual and group counselling, and a whole-person approach that addresses mental, emotional, physical, and social wellbeing. We meet women exactly where they are, without judgment.
We all have a role to play. Let's come together for the women in our community who need it most.
