It all started with one call. When @j.mashadow (Jessica Machado) reached out, she shared something incredible: her mother, @angelapimentelmachado (Angela Machado), a philanthropist in the Portuguese community, spearheaded a donation drive of brand-new essential items for women in shelters. And this time, she did it all for Street Haven. Through her women’s group, Circle of Friends / Festa das Amigas, a powerhouse network of more than 150 women in Toronto, Angela mobilized generosity into action. What struck us most wasn’t just the volume of items collected, but the heart behind it. Angela is someone who raises over a million dollars annually for Princess Margaret in her spare time, and yet she still makes space to support Street Haven as well. Meeting Angela and her daughter, Jessica and seeing how philanthropy and community leadership have been passed down from one generation to the next was truly heartwarming. At 57, Diana never imagined she’d find herself in a shelter. After a domestic dispute, she found herself coming to Street Haven. Diana walked through the doors expecting the worst. She’d never been to a shelter before, but what she found was nothing like she had feared. Instead, she discovered a place filled with genuine care, where staff treated her with a kindness she’d never experienced. Now, Diana is looking towards a future with hope. Her goal is to live independently on her own, focusing on her health and connecting with her community. Meet Rebecca Janos — our newest volunteer! 💛 Rebecca came to Street Haven with the intention of giving back to women in the community, and we're so glad she's here. Motivated by a strong desire to support women navigating difficult circumstances, she’s passionate about expanding access to learning and skill-building and brings lived experience and genuine dedication to everything she does. As a new volunteer she is eager to immerse herself in the work, support the team, and contribute positively to the women and programs at Street Haven. Rebecca will also be helping us in our Donation Room. The donations we receive are essential for the women in our care, and having someone dedicated to sorting and organizing them means nothing goes to waste and every woman gets what she needs.
