About us
Grant House provides an abstinence based 90-day residential treatment program designed for women experiencing challenges regarding substance use and mental health concerns. The program includes individual and group counseling, support, resources and referrals as well as assistance with life skills and planning related to substance use goals. The facility has a capacity of 11 residents; each assigned a primary counsellor to work with throughout their stay. Clients will also have access to a variety of other supports including training and employment services, art therapy, as well as an on-site Psychotherapist. Participants are also eligible for on going post treatment support through our team of outreach counsellors.

- Client Readiness :
Ensuring participants are prepared and committed to the recovery process by conducting a comprehensive assessment prior to intake. This motivational interview style assessment will be inclusive of biopsychosocial information, aim to address immediate barriers such as childcare, legal system involvement, housing and to support full engagement in the treatment program.
- Pre-Treatment Programming :
The intake and assessment worker holds weekly therapeutic pre- treatment virtual groups. This program is accessible so that prospective clients across the province can access and engage in preprogramming. The group will focus on a variety of topics including emotional regulation, effective communication, boundaries, growth, values and more.
- Group-Based Programming :
The program counsellors all support in facilitation of group programming to foster safe sharing, peer support and sharing of lived experiences. Groups are psychoeducational covering a variety of topics including CBT, DBT, inner child work, Seeking Safety (phase 1 trauma work), relapse prevention and more. Group therapy can also include creative and expressive therapies such as art, music, and creative writing.
- Evidence-Based Programming :
The program uses therapies proven effective for women with substance use concerns such as CBT, DBT and Seeking Safety for trauma and addiction. The program implements structure and ensures consistency among staff and client cohorts. Staff can access training regularly and as needed for the best current practices, and common practices among our community partners.
- Harm Reduction Approaches :
While the live-in program is abstinence based, and no substance use is allowed on site, there is a focus on minimizing the negative consequences associated with substance use through education, overdose prevention information, as well as encouragement to respect other women’s pace and stage of change.
- Whole-Person Approach :
Counsellors will work with clients to address comprehensive needs including physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual aspects of health services into treatment. The program includes food and nutrition counselling, a fitness component where clients will have access to the YMCA, yoga and mindfulness. Women are also connected with training and employment services through their stay and have access to a housing worker who is on site. Not only does the program acknowledge the whole person but also addresses women- specific concerns and ensures that all women feel physically and emotionally safe at Grant House.

Who is eligible for the program?
Women aged 24 and older experiencing substance use challenges are eligible. The program also accepts women on probation, parole and those with a conditional sentence. Clients will be screened for recent activity with the legal system and may be found in eligible based on some serious offences.
Is there a cost to participate?
Clients are asked to pay an occupancy fee if not paying rental amounts elsewhere. Clients who are experiencing homelessness, or not paying rent or arrears elsewhere will be provided with a letter for their social assistance workers requesting the rental amount to be paid to Street Haven. There is no cost for food associated with this program.

What support is available after completing the program?
Participants are eligible for up to one year of post-treatment support, which may include continued counseling and assistance with life planning. Clients may attend the post treatment program which takes place weekly on Wednesday from 1-3pm and be assigned with an outreach worker for on going supports.
