  • Our shelter staff? They're pretty incredible. 🌟

Every day, our staff serve over 120 women across all four shelters. But did you know that's only half the story. Every day homeless women show up on our doorstep- asking for a warm meal, or some dry clothes. And our staff never turn them away. We have a reputation in our community as a safe and supportive place. And that is all thanks to our shelter staff.

In just the past four months, 36 women have moved into permanent housing. That's 36 women who now have a place they can call home. An incredible stat all thanks to our shelter staff.

And what do our residents say about our shelter staff? Our clients gave the staff a 90% satisfaction rate. That's not just a number. That's proof that what our team does every single day actually works.

But the stats don't tell the whole story. Our past clients do it better:

"The staff here saw my potential and believed in me when I had trouble believing in myself." - Veronica, former Street Haven client

"The staff were the shining light of the place." - M’shel, former Street Haven client

That's what Emergency Shelter & Homelessness Service Worker Appreciation Week is all about — celebrating the people who see potential, who shine light in dark moments, and who show up with compassion that changes lives.

  • Ever wonder how Toronto's first emergency women's shelter got its start?

It all began with one nurse and one house.

Back in 1965, our founder Peggy Ann Walpole opened her own home as a drop-in for women who needed a safe place to land. A cup of coffee. A listening ear. No judgment, just care. That was the Street Haven way from day one.

Word spread fast. Before long, Peggy's living room couldn't hold everyone who needed help — so she purchased 87 Pembroke and became Canada's first women-centred multi-service housing and recovery agency. We thank the women over the past 6 decades who helped shape the Street Haven we know today.

Peggy would be proud of the shelter staff we have today. Each member shows up with the same empathy and welcoming energy that started Street Haven 61 years ago.

  • Meet the heart behind Street Haven's Hotel Program 💙

"Seeing our clients achieve successful reintegration into society is a very rewarding experience" – this is what drives our dedicated Hotel Program team every single day.

Our team serves 47 women through an individualized approach that prioritizes safety and personal goals. From morning room checks to crisis intervention, case planning to conflict resolution, each day brings new challenges – and new opportunities to make a difference.

What makes it all possible? "Teamwork is another thing that keeps the team going; coming to work every day and knowing that you have wonderful colleagues who are willing to work together to provide the necessary support to the women we serve."

Our case managers, housing workers, and life skills facilitators work collaboratively, getting to know each client while supporting them toward stability and housing. The reward? Former clients drop by to check in with their past case managers and let them know how they are progressing.

To the Hotel Program team: Your hard work, dedication, and compassion make all the difference. Thank you!
